(From Chapter 1)
My name is Eddie Fields, and I'm a ghost hunter. Well, I don't actually hunt for ghosts. They seem to have a knack for finding me. There's a "ghostly grapevine" or something out there, and I've got a pretty good idea who's behind it. I live in St. Andrew, a growing coastal town in the Florida panhandle. I'm sixteen years old and a senior at St. Andrew High, but I don't go around telling the other kids in my class I skipped a grade. I get more than my share of kidding as it is. Ever since User Friendly was published last year in weekly installments in our school newspaper, the jocks and their circle of friends have let me have it, nonstop. None of them believe I really helped two ghosts escape from the "in-between place" where they were trapped for years. They think I'm just a nerd with an overactive imagination. But that's okay. They can believe what they want. I know the truth. I hadn't given ghosts much thought for quite a while. More than a year had passed since Professor Harley Griggs and I solved the mystery of the ancient Indian ceremony that allowed Frank Simmons and Joseph Hawk to escape their bound existence and travel on to their reward. Over a year since I received the strange diary dated 1721 and the message from Frank telling me about my special gift of being able to communicate with ghosts through computers. Nothing strange or unusual had happened since then. As the months went slowly by, I'd more or less given up thinking I possessed any special gift at all. Besides, I had better things to do with my time: my studies at school and the extra classes in computer science at St. Andrew Community College, my job at The Crow's Nest, and my car--a classic '67 Mustang convertible my dad and I restored by ourselves! Yeah, ghosts were just about the last thing on my mind as I slowed for the flashing lights ahead. Little did I realize just how close I was to my next ghostly encounter. . . .
Reviews:
"Haunted High, the second volume of The Ghost Chronicles, continues to document Gordon as a terrific storyteller and a gifted novelist. Highly recommended!" --Midwest Book Review "The plot has enough twists, turns, and dead ends to keep readers engaged. Fans of the X-files and those interested in the paranormal will enjoy the story. Light entertainment and spirited." --School Library Journal "I've been hoping since I read User Friendly: The Ghost Chronicles, Vol. 1 that this would be the beginning of a new mystery series! I'm SO HAPPY to see the second and hope there will be many more! Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys will just have to move over. Lawrence Gordon has created a more updated type of mystery series for today's modern and computer literate teens!" --Detra Fitch, Huntress Book Reviews
"The story maintains just enough suspense and plot twists to be interesting without being overly scary. In fact, my 11-year-old co-reviewer had barely finished reading this book before fretting over how long before the next volume will be available! Haunted High is enjoyable on its own; Eddie's references to his previous ghostly encounter whet the reader's curiosity about how he got started in the ghost rescue business. And Volume 2 ends with a bit of a cliffhanger to make one suspect that Eddie and his computer will be back--hopefully before long!" --Reviewers Consortium
"Haunted High makes for a great read! Combines fun and plot shenanigans. A highly entertaining adventure. 5-stars!" --Buzz Review News
