(From Chapter 3)
It wasn't long before Eddie bolted in the front door all out of breath. He knew the computer was due to arrive today and he was excited. There was no time like the present to see what his computer looked like up close. I went downstairs to see what he was up to. Eddie was typing his fingers to the bone as I walked into the room. I stood quietly beside him for a few seconds as his fingers flew across the keyboard. Words appeared on the screen in rapid succession. "Amazing!" I said, as I turned away. Eddie abruptly stopped typing in mid-stroke. He drew in a sharp breath and whispered, "What the heck?" I turned and looked over his shoulder at the screen. The word "Amazing" was at the end of the sentence Eddie had typed. I was stunned! The word I'd just spoken had appeared on the monitor! Eddie looked around the room to see if someone was playing a joke on him. Then he turned back and pushed the delete key and wiped out the first contact I'd made with a living person in almost fifty years! To be honest, I was as shaken by what had just happened as Eddie seemed to be. He started typing again. He'd been writing President Kennedy's "Ask not what your country can do for you" speech as a test. I looked at the screen and said, "Hi, Eddie!" The words flashed on the screen in mid-sentence. Forgive the pun, but Eddie turned as white as a ghost, and I should know if anyone should. This was getting spooky! He stopped with his fingers in midair. Then, he turned and yelled to his dad for help. Eddie got no answer, so he went upstairs to get his dad. Now that he was out of the room, I decided to see just what I could do with the computer. I stared at the screen for a moment, then searched the keyboard and found the delete key. Concentrating really hard, I pushed the key with my finger and the words were gone. Very interesting, I thought. I simply talk to the screen and words appear, push this key and they disappear. I decided to try again. "Hi, Eddie. My name is Frank Simmons, and I've been dead for more than forty years," I said to the monitor. As I spoke, the letters formed right before my eyes. At last, I thought, I can make contact with a real, living person! I felt like dancing, like having a party! I had made contact! Maybe being dead wouldn't be so bad from now on. …
